Support for the Ukrainian resistance
LET'S PROTEST ON 24 August 2025
On 15 August 2025 in Alaska, Trump and Putin openly displayed their de facto alliance during one of the worst sessions of ‘diplomacy’ that was both secret and theatrical. But they face a serious difficulty: Ukraine is resisting!
While pro-Ukrainian demonstrations swept across Alaska, the Anchorage summit produced a kind of ‘no agreement agreement’: nothing official came out of it, and Donald Trump immediately turned against Ukraine, moving towards recognition of the annexation of Crimea, demanding that the entire Donbass region be ceded to the Russian occupiers, de facto acceptance of this occupation in the long term, similar to the occupation of the West Bank, and the repeated and supposedly definitive rejection of Ukraine's request to join NATO...
At the same time, Russia has stepped up its bombing of Ukrainian civilians, infrastructure and heritage, continuing the genocidal destruction of Ukrainian identity in the occupied territories, without even responding to Melania Trump's appeal on behalf of the deportees.
This situation has placed European states in an untenable position, prompting a reaction from the Baltic and Scandinavian countries and a diplomatic initiative by France, Germany and the United Kingdom demanding that they be received immediately by Trump, along with President Zelensky.
Trump had to agree, a sign of the fragility of his position.
But nothing more came of it, beyond diplomatic symbolism, with meetings between Trump and Zelensky, then between Trump and Macron (France), Merz (Germany), Starmer (United Kingdom), Meloni (Italy), Stubb (Finland), Von der Leyen (European Commission) and Rutte (NATO). Trump inaugurated these meetings in front of the media by announcing that peace negotiations could, after all, take place without a ceasefire!
Macron and Merz opposed this position and called for a four-party meeting between Russia, the United States, Ukraine and the EU. All saw fit to flatter their host and play unity in what was, in many respects, a diplomatic comedy.
Meanwhile, the war continues and Ukraine is defending itself.
The French Committee of the RESU calls for solidarity with the Ukrainian people, solidarity from below with social movements, trade unionists and feminists, especially after the ‘July days’, when the Ukrainian people reiterated that it is freedom and democracy that they want and defend. Solidarity also means military aid, which must be stepped up now in order to prevent any Russian advance and, on the contrary, to push back Russian troops and undermine Putin's regime.
We repeat: it is the fate of the peoples of Europe and of the whole world, from Palestine to Ukraine, that is at stake. Any position taken by the left and the labour movement that would go in Putin's direction, such as supporting Russia's demand for a change of power and regime in Ukraine in the midst of war and martial law, would be a stab in the back not only of the Ukrainian people, but of the social struggles of all peoples.
No imperial war, no imperial peace leading to inevitable future wars! Peace through the defeat of tyrants: against Trump and Putin, solidarity among the peoples of Europe and the world, arms for Ukraine!
